Sports

Strength and spirit, play and progress

Dream as big as you can dream, and everything is possible

– Michael Phelps

As one sets foot into Daffodils English School, what immediately captures the eye is the expansive ground buzzing with energy and the numerous opportunities available for sports and physical development. The school’s well-equipped sports department, supported by a dedicated and efficient staff, provides students with the perfect environment to explore and excel in sports.

At DES, we strongly believe that a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Hence, sports and physical activities are given great emphasis. Every student from all grades has two physical education classes per week, during which they actively participate in a sport of their choice on the school grounds.

Mass P.T. is conducted for students of Grades 1–7 every Wednesday and Friday, focusing on exercise routines that enhance endurance, balance, discipline, and cognitive development.

The practice of yoga is mandatory across all grades, with one dedicated yoga period each week. Yoga, with its numerous benefits, plays a vital role in the physical and mental well-being of students during their formative years.

The school organises a variety of individual sports such as track and field events — including running, shot put, long jump, and special races — and team sports such as cricket, badminton, basketball, hockey, football, relay races, and tug of war. These are systematically conducted grade-wise for both boys and girls by the P.E. instructors. The heats and finals are a visual delight, marked by enthusiastic participation and true sportsmanship.

To recognise and reward effort, certificates and medals are presented to deserving students. House points and individual points are also awarded to promote healthy competition and to appreciate active participation.

Team events and inter-house competitions instil values of collaboration, communication, leadership, and team spirit. They help students build social bonds and develop essential life skills beyond the classroom.

DES also runs after-school sports clubs for cricket, badminton, basketball, football, hockey, karate, gymnastics, roller skating, kabaddi, and kho-kho. Students can enrol in these by paying a nominal monthly fee.

Throughout the academic year, DES students actively participate in various CISCE Games and Sports events at the zonal and regional levels, achieving commendable success in badminton, kho-kho, football, and athletics.

A notable highlight is the presentation of sports scholarships to talented students across all grades in sports like cricket, hockey, badminton, basketball, and football — an excellent initiative by the school management to motivate budding athletes.

Special Events and Celebrations

National Sports Day
National Sports Day is celebrated on the 29th of August 2024, commemorating the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. The day features a special assembly that includes a speech on the importance of the occasion and a lively display of all sports activities at DES, accompanied by commentary and exhibits.

Ebullience – The Annual Sports Day

Ebullience is celebrated every year in December on the main school ground. The atmosphere is vibrant and energetic. The events of the day feature a well-synchronised yoga display, an energetic mass drill, and a disciplined march past by the students from the four houses at school, the Scouts and Guides contingent, and the school band. Students are well-trained in advance for each of the displays.

The exhilarating special races for students of different grades and the thrilling inter-house tug of war showcase the competitive zeal of the participants. The highlight of the day is the announcement of the Best Sportsperson of the Year in recognition of outstanding achievements and dedication to sports, as well as individual championship trophies for exceptional performances in the races conducted during the academic year.

Thus, sports at DES are an integral part of the curriculum and bring much joy and vivacity to the campus.
